Who Is KputerBob?

My name is Bob Chambers.   I have a computer repair service in St. Louis, Missouri, and I am asked this question all the time, "Where did the name "KputerBob" come from?"   Actually, the name is derived from "Computer Bob", which was a nickname given to me by one of my larger clients sometime in the early to mid 90's.

My client had several Bob's working there at the time and each Bob was given a short descriptive nickname to help distinguish which Bob was being referring to at the time by the different departments and various corporate meetings.   For example, there was "Shipping Bob", "Salesman Bob", "Accounting Bob", etc.   When it came time to nickname me, I guess I was just lucky that the distinguishing title of "AssHole Bob" was already assigned...   Rumor had it that "Shipping Bob" and "Salesman Bob" quite often used the term "AssHole Bob" interchangeably with each other, when placing the blame for errors in customer's orders not being received as requested.   As a matter of fact, "AssHole Bob" worked in the cafeteria, and had nothing to do with the orders at all.   Go figure...

Time went on and the nickname "Computer Bob" spread to my other clients as well.   When I would call homeowners to come pick up their repaired systems they would say, "Who?", when I said Bob Chambers was calling.   I would then say "Computer Bob", and they would immediately know who was calling.

And now you know how Bob Chambers was quite naturally given the nickname, "Computer Bob", which has stuck all these years, by the way, but it doesn't explain how the name "KputerBob" came from that.

I will explain that little story in the next section: "Getting From Computer Bob To KputerBob"!

All of my friends, as friends do, had "picked my brain" from time to time concerning their computer problems.   This in turn, led them to refer me to their friends, family, co-workers and e-mail buddies as well, when they heard that someone was having computer problems.

This led to a considerable amount of word-of-mouth business for me in St. Louis, especially with the smaller Mom & Pop businesses.   I would answer the phone "Good morning, this is Bob, how may I help you?", and someone on the other end would ask "Is this Computer Bob?"

I had this one older buddy that couldn't say "Computer Bob", much less anything else, whenever he got drunk.   It would just come out "Puter Bob."   He would try to introduce me (why, I don't know) and say, "He works on puters... he's Puter Bob!"

It was not uncommon for me to occasionally meet some of my clients at "Happy Hour", or some of them might catch up with me at a Sports Bar after work.   One evening Ric, the older buddy I mentioned before, was there when a couple of my clients and other associates were on hand and he slurred the word, "Puter Bob".   Well, something like that catches on like wildfire, and it wasn't long before I became known as simply "Puter Bob".

Over time, I noticed that most people were pronouncing my nickname "Ka-Puter-Bob" as opposed to just "Puter Bob", so I started using "KputerBob", for short, on the internet, phone calls and in my e-mails.

And now you know how Bob Chambers has quite naturally went from just "Bob" to "Computer Bob" and on to "KputerBob" over the years!

...And should I happen to call you, your caller-ID will display, what else?   "KputerBob"!

The question has been answered;   "Bob Chambers Is KputerBob!"
